Can you see who views your Instagram highlights?

Highlights keep your stories on your profile long after the 24 hours are up. But do you still see who watches them? And if you watch someone else's highlights, will they know? The answer depends on one number: 48 hours.

The 48-hour rule

A highlight is not a new post; it is a collection of your existing stories. Each story keeps its own viewer list, and Instagram keeps that list for 48 hours after the story was posted: 24 hours while it is live and another 24 hours in your archive.

So if you post a story and add it to a highlight right away, you can see who watched it during those first two days – whether they saw it in the story tray or by tapping the highlight on your profile. Once the 48 hours are over, the list is gone, even though the story stays in the highlight.

How to check who viewed a story in a highlight

  1. Open the highlightGo to your profile and tap the highlight circle.
  2. Find the storyTap through to a story that is less than 48 hours old.
  3. Open the viewer listTap the viewer count or "Activity" at the bottom, or swipe up. Older stories show no list.

What insights show after 48 hours

If you use a business or creator account, Instagram's insights keep counting after the viewer list disappears. For each story you can see figures such as accounts reached, replies, profile visits and link taps. These are totals – insights never name the accounts behind them.

If you watch someone else's highlights

  • Story younger than 48 hours: if you are logged in, your account appears on that story's viewer list, even when you open it from the highlight.
  • Story older than 48 hours: no names are shown; at most you are counted in the owner's statistics.
  • Without your account: when you use an anonymous highlights viewer, your account is never involved, so your name cannot appear, whatever the story's age.

The order in the viewer list is calculated by Instagram from how accounts interact. It is not a ranking of who looked most often, and it does not reveal who visited your profile.

Can you see who visited your profile?

No. Instagram has never shown profile visitors, and it does not share that information with other apps. Apps and websites that promise a list of "profile stalkers" or "secret admirers" cannot get this data. At best they guess from likes and comments; at worst they collect your Instagram password or charge for made-up results. If an app asks you to log in with Instagram to show your visitors, do not do it.

How to control who sees your highlights

  • Make your account private: only approved followers can see your stories and highlights.
  • Hide your story from specific accounts: in your story settings you can pick people who will not see your stories or highlights while logged in.
  • Use Close Friends: stories shared with Close Friends are visible only to that list.
  • Remove old highlights: if a highlight contains something you no longer want public, edit or delete it.

Keep in mind that anything on a public account is visible to everyone, including people who are not logged in. Hiding a story from an account only applies while that account is signed in.
