How to download Instagram stories on iPhone
The story download and the Photos library are two separate steps. Use the Story Downloader to request a public story file, check Safari’s download list, then use the file’s sharing options if you want a copy in Photos.
1. Find the public story
Open the Instagram Story Downloader in Safari. Enter the account’s username, its Instagram profile link, or a story link, then tap Find stories. A story link opens the account’s current story list; it does not automatically save one selected item.
The account must be public and have available stories. You do not need to enter an Instagram password. If you arrived inside another app’s built-in browser and cannot find its saving controls, open the tool in Safari instead.
2. Download the photo or video
Find the thumbnail you want and tap its Download photo or Download video button. Tap the thumbnail first if you want a full-size preview; the preview has the same labeled download action. Confirm the browser’s download prompt if one appears.
For several stories, save each item separately. The download button requests the file; it cannot confirm where iOS stored it. Wait for Safari to finish before leaving the page.
3. Find the file in Safari or Files
In Safari, use the Downloads control near the address/search field to check the file. You can also open Files → Browse → iCloud Drive → Downloads. If you chose a different download location, look there instead. These are the locations described in Apple’s guide to finding downloads.
Our filenames begin with api- and include the account and story identifier. Searching for that prefix can help if you have many files. A completed file in Downloads is saved even if it has not appeared in Photos.
4. Add a supported file to Photos
Open the downloaded image or video in Files and open its sharing options. Choose Save Image or Save Video if your iOS version and file type offer that action, then check Photos. Menu names can vary.
If the action is unavailable, keep the original in Files and check whether the file opens and plays there. This tool does not convert unsupported formats or force a file into your Photos library.
If the download does not work
- No story thumbnails: check the username. The account may be private, or its stories may have expired.
- The browser shows a player: use the available download or save action in Safari, then check its Downloads list.
- The file is incomplete: check the download status and available storage before trying again. Return to the story list to request currently available media.
- Music or stickers are missing: Instagram may supply media without effects rendered by its app. Another save attempt does not reconstruct those effects.
For stories saved publicly by their owner, try the Highlights viewer. Private, Close Friends and removed stories are not available. Save content you own or have permission to use.
