Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?

Updated · 4 min read · By the InstaAnonViewer team

You want to keep a story – a recipe, a quote, an event date – and your thumb is already on the screenshot buttons. Will the person get a notification? For stories the answer is no, but there is one place on Instagram where screenshots are reported.

Stories: no screenshot notification

Instagram briefly tested screenshot alerts for stories in 2018 and dropped the feature. Today, taking a screenshot or a screen recording of someone's story does not send them any notification, and the story's viewer list does not mark who took one.

What the owner does see is that you viewed the story, because your account appears on its viewer list for 48 hours. A screenshot changes nothing about that – the view itself is what is recorded.

Posts, reels and profiles: no notification

Screenshots of feed posts, carousels, reels, profile pages and comments are never reported. Instagram does not tell people who looked at their posts or profile at all, so there is nothing to attach a screenshot alert to.

Direct messages: it depends

  • Normal chat messages and photos: no notification.
  • Disappearing photos and videos (sent with "view once" or "allow replay"): the sender sees that you took a screenshot or screen recording.
  • Vanish mode chats: the other person is notified when you take a screenshot.

Instagram adjusts these features from time to time, so treat disappearing messages as "the sender will probably know".

Better than a screenshot: save the original

A screenshot captures the interface, the progress bar and anything else on your screen, and a video story becomes a single still frame. If you want to keep a story from a public account, the story downloader saves the original photo or video instead – and because it works without your Instagram account, you do not appear on the viewer list either. Our guide on watching stories anonymously explains why.

A word on privacy

No notification does not mean anything goes. People share stories with an audience they have in mind, and a screenshot can carry that moment far beyond it. Keep what you save for yourself, ask before sharing someone's story with others and never use screenshots to embarrass or pressure anyone.
